Mohammed Abdul Bakeer Markar (12 May 1917 – 10 September 1997) was an eminent Sri Lankan politician and civil servant. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the Governor of the Southern Province. M.A Bakeer Markar caught the imagination of a nation beyond a statesman as a humanist and an ambassador of goodwill.

Imthiaz Bakeer Markar is a Sri Lankan lawyer, politician and scholar. He is a Member of Parliament from the National List of the Samagi fana Balawegaya, he was the Cabinet Minister of Media, Postal and Telecommunications from 2001 to 2004, State Minister of Housing from 1989 to 1993 and Member of the Parliament from the Kalutara District from 1989 to 2004. Imthiaz also served as the Chairman of the National Media Centre and the Vice President of the United National Party (UNP).

Adhil Bakeer Markar was born on March 11, 1990 to Imthiaz Bakeer Markar and Ummu Fareeda. He was an Attorney-at-Law and a youth leader who made a strong case for the causes of Sri Lankan youth. Adhil passed away at the age of 26 on October 12 , 2016 while he was reading for his Masters at the London School of Economics.

Be it a diplomat, statesman, researcher, student or any person with a zest for knowledge, this platform is essentially a slice of contemporary Sri Lankan history which calls to be perpetuated.

Today (14th July 2026), I visited the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Colombo, ​​met with the Honourable Ambassador, expressed my condolences and sympathy on the passing of His Highness the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
